SAY NO TO PLASTIC, SWITCH TO NATURAL FIBRES

We have today reached a stage where we are surrounded by plastic in its different forms. Owing to its ability to be moulded in any form desirable and the fact that it is one of the cheapest materials available, plastic has today crept into every household in the form of bags, bottles, toys, packaging, furniture, baskets and what not.

However this excessive usage of plastic is highly detrimental to mankind. Most plastic is Non- biodegradable. Over 50% of plastic is never reused or recycled. Almost 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year choking the fragile marine eco system.

Time has thus come for us to reduce our dependence on plastic and replace it with more eco-friendly and sustainable options.

The Indian landscape, a vibrant mix of tropical and temperate vegetation, is replete with a variety of Natural Fibres that can be woven into aesthetic items of display and use, with even the most complex of patterns requiring nothing more than a needle, blade and a small wooden hammer.

For centuries India has been using Natural Fibres for functional purposes.  Rural India still largely utilises items prepared from grass for everyday use. Due to improvement in techniques being employed in production, artisans now have the ability to create and produce both traditional and contemporary designs.

Most popular amongst the natural fibres is Bamboo, also called “Green Gold” in recent times. It is a grass which acts as a weed in terms of its ability to grow quickly and that too without fertilizers and pesticides. It’s naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It can be harvested 3 to 5 times a year. Bamboo is also biodegradable, naturally helps rebuild eroded soil, and produces 35% more oxygen as compared to similar plants.

Bamboo is highly versatile and can be moulded into furniture, decorative items and articles of everyday use. Today bamboo is used both in its natural form and through the use of processed bamboo fibres. Some items of everyday use where Bamboo can be used as an alternative to plastic are Baskets, Place mats, Runners, Trays, Boxes, Coasters, Spatulas etc. All these can be found at very affordable prices only at www.dharini.co.in.

Bamboo table mats and runners are products especially high in demand due to their beautiful designs and rustic appeal.
